Pendeen to Sennen Cove

Pendeen to Sennen Cove - Sunday 14th April 2013

Path Facts - Length: 9 miles, Ascent: 1923 feet

Having arrived early and spent a couple of days in and around Penzance I had experienced, according to the locals, the first warm(ish) weather for months and a good dose of rain as well. Given we were in Penzance, a convenient stop at the end of the train journey, and needed to get to Pendeen on the North Coast we had booked a cab to get in a reasonable start. Bus was possible but we wouldn't have got going until early afternoon.

So after a leisurely 8.30am breakfast and the last minute usual psyching up routine, the cab took us across the county (only 7 miles) to Geevor Tin Mine where we left off last. Started walking at 9.45 am.

A fairly cold day, though allegedly almost tropical to what Cornwall had been experiencing up to a couple of weeks before we came. A bit of drizzle but better than what might have been expected from the rain and gusts hitting the B&B this morning.

Well, Geevor, Levant, Botallack... many of the famous Cornish mining sites were on view today.

Cape Cornwall was impressive but less impressive was that the only possible comestibles stop at the NT car park was closed! Closed I tell you!!

This rock formation is meant to look like Charles de Gaulle apparently.

A short day today and we came within view of Sennen Cove in no time.

Stopped on the approach to Sennen to chill and watch the waves. This would be another feature of this trip. Due to some strong winds, the seas were particularly choppy and waves were pretty impressive.

The weather had cleared to blue sky but the pictures are somewhat deceptive. I doubt the temperature got above 12 degrees C for the whole trip and with a stiff breeze as well! Visible on the horizon in the photo below is the group of rocks where Longships lighthouse is, right next to Land's End where we would get to tomorrow.

Arrived probably about 2.30pm in Sennen Cove.

Cream Tea then a wander on the beach.

Sitting down was slightly painful after being blown on my arse onto a rock by a surprise gust of wind earlier in the day. My ongoing near fatal posterior injury was yet another pervasive feature of this tour which you'll no doubt look forward to hearing more about. Where's the West Country New Age Reiki Butt Healing Massage with Aromatherapy Oils accompanied by Dolphin Music when you need it?

Checked in at the Old Success Inn, a St Austell Brewery establishment. The room was ok, but there was a bath and a separate lounge area which is always good. The food was really good, and the advantage in staying in the pub is the absence of a walk to the pub! Nonetheless we ventured out for more wave watching. The tide had come in and the waves hitting the rocks and sea wall were pretty spectacular.
