I arrived in Minehead late afternoon, bought some supplies, checked local info then parked the car somewhere where it would be safe for a few days. Minehead has a Butlins on the East side of the town. We were staying on the West side near the harbour and very close to the monument that marks the start of the walk (see photo taken from the Inn - the monument can be seen through the trees in the middle of the picture).
Minehead...well I wouldn't like to pass judgement...but here's a couple of descriptions of a pub (The Hobby Horse Inn) a little way into town from where we were staying, courtesy of Beer in the Evening customer reviews:
"Scary pub. Worried I might go to the toilet and 'dissapear' Beer was okay though - looks nice from outside."
"A horrible place full of braying chavs, presumably from Butlins. Would not like to see what it's like in summer. Worth avoiding if possible."
Being at the comparatively posh (and priced accordingly) end of town, we expected a better class of clientele. We had plenty of opportunity to lower the class of a joint in our own way in the future but that's a later story.
I checked in then ate at "The Old Ship Aground" where the young Master Tebbutt appeared at about 8pm having not worn out, broken or had drop off any parts of his body before the start of the walk. This was a good sign.
Info:
I'm going to try and keep a record of each place we stay, the food, the beer, any points of interest etc. This section will be at the end of each post so as not to bore the casual reader to death with the detail.

I re-packed the rucksack several times on Thursday evening, leaving the excess in the car and trying to go with the bare minimum. This is a listing for August so may be different at other times of the year but it turned out to be fairly well judged for the 4 day duration. The pack consisted of:
- light goretex
- light fleece pullover
- 2 pairs light pocketed trousers
- thermal vest in case of getting colder
- sandals for evening
- underwear
- one short sleeve shirt for walking
- two t-shirts for PM
- camera + batteries
- 2 books
- maps + info
- 2 sigg bottles
- food (apples + flapjacks!)
Of course the more refind 'braying chavs' go to Butlins in Sgeggy or Bognor... mmm, perhaps I should do a blogg on the exploits of such visits including Bob the Builder & the African Acrobats. Wouldn't be half as good as this blogg though... - SS.
ReplyDeletethe 3 pubs have since changed hands and definitely changed for the better. Hobby Horse now restored to it's former 19C glory with a ballroom, The Ship, excellent beer and food classy chairs and carpets. Shame you missed that. Perhaps when you walk back the other way ;-)
